Last week’s wind and rain did not deter over 100 green finger and a few brown thumb gardeners from turning up at Belswan’s Lifestyle Village in Pinjarra to absorb the insightful and at times amusing presentation of gardening personality Sabrina Hahn.

Titled “Get Set for Spring” Sabrina covered everything from soil preparation to the removal of non performing trees and shrubs, “if they haven’t moved since last year rip ‘em out and replace them”. Western Australia’s sandy soils lack the ability to retain water so she explained that now is the time to spread soil wetting agents to get your plants off to a good start in spring. Sabrina also spoke of her love of the North West and her work with indigenous groups to develop sustainable gardens for food production as well as the lack of garden space around building developments in cities, “where you previously had one house now you have a block of units with minimal areas for a garden”. She also commented on the gardens at the village that are maintained by Ben the gardener and the residents vegie patch, all contributing to a healthy living environment.

Question time caused a few laughs, “What do I do with these sweet potatoes? Eat half and plant the other half”. Everyone who posed a question got detailed information on how to proceed with their problem or query.

Guests were then treated to an indulgent afternoon tea as they left with compliments flowing freely while some took the opportunity to tour the village but all agreed it was a great day out.

Kevin Phillips, Belswan’s Managing Director was overwhelmed by the response to the Open Day Event and is considering future interesting subjects and personalities as a follow up to Sabrina’s most successful presentation.
